Claires Thoughts On Dad

"I like his firetrucks and I like to sit in them."
"I like to go to his firehouse."
"Hims makes good steak."
"I like him to tuck me in when you is gone."
"I really want to go with him to rescue someone in his firetruck."
"I like to draw him pictures of squares and circles and triangles."
"He's fun because he's good at wrestling with us. I love wresting with daddy."
"I also like for him to turn on movies for me."
"Daddy sometimes sounds like a turtle."
"Daddy likes to cook and go to bed."
What does dad look like?- "a fireman"
What does a fireman look like? -"He wears a fireman hat and a fireman coat and a fireman boots and he's dirty. "

-"Mommy I wanna stop talkin about dad now because I'm is gettin sweaty and I need to color."

Hi Grandpa Ned

The kids were playing outside the other night with their father, and when I came outside to see what they were up to this is the sight that greeted me.

I swear I have never seen a more interesting sky, and while my husband was less than impressed I could not stop staring.
Needing someone to share my enthusiasm for the beauty of it all, I pointed it out to the kids.
Sean then looks over his shoulder and says "he's peeking at us!"
The "he" that my Sean is referring to was my grandpa Ned who passed when Sean was just a few months old. Sean has developed a relationship of sorts with him and whenever he sees the sun rays shining through the clouds he knows that it's his great grandpa Ned stopping by to check on us.
Sean is the only one that without fail will stop what he's doing and say
 "Hi grandpa Ned!"

And from the looks of the rays that followed, it sure seems to me like grandpa Ned got the message.

Happy First Day of Autumn

"Autumn is a second spring
when every leaf is a flower"
~Albert Camus

My favorite time of the year is finally here!
(and now I finally don't look weird for having my fall decor out!)

Survival

Life has been crazy.
Between the house and the kids, I have time for next to nothing. I feel like sort of a fool for even saying that because I know that in another 5 years my current version of busy will look like a vacation compared to what's surely coming my way.
Kind of like when my husband and I look back on the days when we used to bicker about whose turn it was to put all of Nates toys back on the tray once he'd tossed them all off for the 15th time. We ask ourselves what we were thinking and wish we could go back and tell ourselves to appreciate the simplicity of it all.
But that's the way it goes right?
You don't ever know how good it all is in the moment. Only after that moment has passed do we look back at how wonderful it all was compared to whatever struggles we have in our current time.
That thought seems a bit deep... and silly considering I'm giving the same amount of thought right now to some leftover pizza that's in my refrigerator.
Oh well. It's the best can do in this moment.
We had a birthday party for Danny and Claire this past weekend.
I was so busy enjoying the party and visiting with our guests that this sad picture is all that I have as proof that my children turned 3&4.
False... I have a million pictures as proof that they did indeed turn 3 and 4, just none from the party. Which, to be honest, wasn't even on either of their birthdays so I feel fine about it. We didn't sing Happy Birthday or light candles either. Claire was sound asleep on the deck in the middle of her party and Danny was too happy playing to be bothered. I might regret that later in life, but I'm pretty sure I won't. We all had fun and at the end of the day the kids were happy and had spent the day doing exactly what they wanted to do. That's the point of a birthday anyways right?
So... we'll continue to just keep on surviving...until things calm down and we are able to find some time to slow down and relax...
(35 years from now!)

Happy 4th Birthday Claire!

You were the first girl.

You were the first to look like your dad.
We would come in to check on you in the mornings because you wouldn't cry when you woke up, instead you'd be looking around quietly in your crib.
You loved to smile...and still do!

You love your brothers and they all take turns loving you right back.

You brought frill to our house with your love of pink princesses.
You don't eat meat but are always willing to try a bite of steak just to be like the boys.
After 2 long years of watching your brothers go off to school, you finally get to go too and are loving every second.
Your favorite movie is Cinderella and you have a better day if you're wearing "beautiful clothes!"
You do NOT like sharing you age with Danny for 5 days...

but those yucky 5 days are all over  (at least for another year) because you're 4 years old now!

Happy Birthday Claire Bear... we love you!

A Firefighter Poem

HE STARES IN THE FACE OF DEATH
WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT
TO SAVE THAT ONE SPECIAL LIFE
THAT HE SO BRAVELY SOUGHT
HE HAS WALKED AS CLOSE TO
"HELL ON EARTH"
AS ANY MAN COULD DO
AND HE'S SO PROUD OF THE JOB HE DID
FOR PEOPLE HE NEVER KNEW
HE PUTS HIS LIFE ON THE LINE
EVERY TIME DUTY CALLS
ALWAYS DOING WHAT NEEDS TO DONE
WITHOUT EVEN A PAUSE
HE IS A FIREMAN
WITH OVERWHELMING PRIDE
NEVER AFRAID TO TAKE A CHANCE
WHEN SAVING SOMEONE'S LIFE
OFTEN HE SAYS
"IT'S MY JOB"
BUT WE REALLY KNOW
THAT HE IS VERY SPECIAL
AND ALWAYS READY TO GO
SO WHEN YOU HEAR THE SIRENS WAIL
OR SEE THE FLASHING LIGHTS
STAND ASIDE AND LOOK WITH PRIDE
HE'S GOING TO SAVE A LIFE.

Weekends for us

The term weekend is defined as the period from Friday evening through Sunday evening, especially regarded as a time for leisure. This would be especially true if by leisure they mean screaming, fighting, sliding, crying, climbing, bleeding, wrecking, breaking, throwing, kicking, laughing, running, jumping, wrestling, eating, spitting, digging, swinging, dropping, riding, racing, and my personal favorites- punishing my van with a hockey stick (Danny!) AND swallowing a dime (Sean!)

...and I still have a whole day to go.

...except it's a holiday weekend so really I have 2.

...hear that sound? It's me weeping.
